Just For Teens

What if I told you there was a great movie out about a runaway teenager who was having difficulties at home and how she overcame them. She was being raised by an Aunt and Uncle. No one seems to know where her parents are. She thinks she is misunderstood by her family and that no on really cares. She runs away only to regret it and try to return home, but gets lost and caught up in other things that take her even further from home.
Any idea what this movie might be called? The ideas seem relevant enough for it to have been put out in 2007. But believe it or not, this movie premiered in 1939. It was called The Wizard of Oz. Near the end of the movie, Dorothy had to say a certain phrase and click her ruby red slippers to get back home. Remember the phrase? “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”
As it turns out, Dorothy had just been dreaming the whole time. There was no place called Oz, and she had never even gotten as far as her leaving her backyard. But sadly today that is not the case for many teenagers. Far too many teenagers leave home because of bad family situations. Between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away in a year according to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. Almost 50% of those indicated that a conflict between them and their parent or guardian was a major problem.
Maybe you’re a teenager in conflict with your family. Teenage years are not the easiest to deal with, especially in today’s world. It’s easy to feel unloved and misunderstood while adults are trying to cope with their own issues. There is help to overcome the rough spots in your teenage years.
